It's a bittersweet
day today. Sammi and Joy left for their new home this morning.
I keep telling myself that this is what we are supposed to do: rehab
them and find them good forever homes. But when they go, each one
takes a part of my heart with them. It's unthinkable to me that
Sammi would have been slaughtered, and Joy never would have seen her mom's
beautiful face or hear her knicker to her. I know this is the
reality for many every day; the senseless and inhumane slaughter is
wrong. Just plain wrong. We need to push hard to pass laws
to protect them. We need to educate others, and irresponsible
breeding needs to be stopped. People need to understand when they
buy a pony for their child that the child will grow up and the pony will
still need to be cared for -- owning a horse is a commitment for life.
Joy is growing up so fast. She has a HUGE QH butt and an Arabian
dished face and in between is, well, we don't know! She's such an
inquisitive and brave little girl. She will go off exploring and
get her mom all spun up. She learned how to give kisses and does
know the difference between nips and kisses. Sometimes she'll test
you with nips first but if you tell her no, to give kisses, she will.
She's a smart one, and I can't wait to get updates from her new mom,
Kara. And Sammi, she is a big beautiful mare that has come a long
way. Since she has been with us, she learned that not all humans
are bad. I promised her she'd never know an unkind hand again, and
I know her new mom will help me fulfill that promise. Sammi was
loved and treated with kindness, love, and respect here. And in
turn, the fear and anxiety subsided, and she came to welcome scratches
and hugs. It takes time and patience with horses that have not
been treated kindly, and it takes as long as it takes.
Kara, their new mom, has the patience of a saint. Kara and I have
already shared lots of tears over these two. Kara has a heart of
gold and will provide so much love and care to them it,s a true
blessing.
Just look at what we all did together! We gave Sammi a new
start on life and welcomed Joy into the world. We gave them a
future. Without the support of others, we could not have helped
them. God bless all of you, and we'll update when we can.
