URGENT NEEDS UPDATED August 3rd, 2008
All donations are tax deductible - we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization.
Shelters, gutters, Purina Strategy & Sr.
feed, Bahia grass seed and/or sod. We need monetary donations to help with holistic and
traditional vet care, farrier and dentist bills. We decided to
give an explanation (see below) for a few of the items in order for
people to understand why we need, not want, but need an item.
Our rescue is in hot and humid Florida and we have very, very little
shade on 17.5 acres. Most of our horses have special needs and are
not readily adoptable. Shelters, shade, fans, even a stackable
washer/dryer, and other items on our list may be considered by some
people as "want" items vs. needed items. If it is thought out, and
logic is applied, it should become apparent why the item(s) is on the
list. If it is not, or if anyone has any questions, please feel
free to email us.

HORSE & RESCUE NEEDS
| Paved driveway
with culvert |
The driveway,
which is near the top of the property, is made of lime rock - as is the
main road by the rescue. When it rains the driveway washes out and
deep, unsafe ruts are formed - ruts that end up going through main
paddocks. We have had trucks pulling trailers, with horses loaded,
get stuck in the driveway. They sometimes park in the road to load
and unload and this is dangerous - the road is very narrow and other
vehicles can't pass. After rains we try to fix this as best we can
with the tractor but it is always a temporary fix. We have talked
to the county about this problem but the bottom line is that the
driveway is our issue and the only way to fix it is to put in a better
driveway with a culvert. There simply are never any funds for this
because of the high costs of feed, hay, vet bills, overhead costs, etc. |

Concrete/pervious
concrete
12' x 24' section |
We have an
Arabian stallion that is afraid of people because of things humans have
done to him. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body - he is just
very untrusting of humans and has every right to be. He will not
let a farrier or vet treat him. A few months ago we had a vet come
out with a dart gun to knock him out in order to have his feet trimmed.
While he was down his teeth were done and the vet did a general exam
which is normally needed only annually. But his feet need to be
trimmed more often. A concrete pad outside of his shelter would
help him to file his own feet down. This item may sound like a
luxury to some people but to us it is a way to help a horse that has
been abused so badly he may never allow anyone else to handle his feet
and when you dart an animal there are always risks. We don't like
to take risks. |

| Gutters (and fascia board) |
We desperately
need gutters on part of the barn and at the 2 stall run-in in order to
prevent erosion and make it safer for horses and humans. At the 2
stall run-in, the rain runs off the roof front and back. In the
back once it lands it runs to the front of the run-in adding to the rain
already running off the roof at the front of the barn - leaving a muddy
mess for horses to stand in which can cause hoof problems. In one
case, the horse is an Arabian stallion that wouldn't let anyone work on
his feet if he did develop problems. If the water ran off
correctly there would be less standing water that could breed
mosquitoes. We also need to install some sort of drain system to
make the water run off to areas where it won't cause problems. |

| Hedges for a
windbreak |
One side of the
property is bordered by a lime rock road. When a vehicle goes down
the road a lot of dust is created which usually blows into the paddocks.
We also have mighty winds that blow dust and dirt from the road.
We've had to treat a couple of horses for eye scratches caused by the
blowing sand/dirt. Having a wind break will cut down on the
blowing dust and sand and they may also help with very cold winds that
come across the pastures in the winter. |

We rehabilitate and care for
neglected, abused, surrendered, and abandoned horses. Often,
horses have been injured, have not received needed medical care, some
have been starved, abused and mistreated and no longer trust humans.
We work hard to return each horse to its optimum health (mentally and
physically). When the horse is ready, we provide necessary
training and conditioning. When a horse is ready for a new home,
our goal is to place the horse in a carefully screened, loving forever
home where it will be asked to do no more than what the horse is
comfortable doing.
It takes a tremendous amount of time, work, energy, and money to help
the horses and to keep the rescue operating. Monetary donations
are appreciated but we can also use donations of items listed below.
All monetary donations go directly to the feed and care of the horses -
no amount is too small!
