This 4 year old mare is Adiva, a.k.a. "Princess Adiva"
(means "gentle Princess"). She arrived in 2007.
She was very much underweight. She's an Arabian/TB cross with a very
sweet disposition.
Adiva is very intelligent. She's put on much needed weight,
is healthy, and is ready for a forever home!
Adiva thinks like an Arabian and would do very
well at bonding with her own special human. She is ready to
start her saddle training.
She needs an experienced human with a lot of patience
and time to commit to her - someone that is gentle, yet firm. She
will greatly benefit from consistency.

Bud is a gentle 6 yr old QH gelding that is a very pleasant horse.
He keeps us amused with his antics. He loves playing with the
water hose and getting everyone else wet.
He is so inquisitive and just keeps us laughing.
He and Beauty are best friends. He has been started
under saddle and is doing good.
Bud was bitten in the face by a snake when he was younger, along with
a young filly. The filly took the first bite and most of the venom.
Sadly, she didn't make it. Because she took most of the venom, Bud survived.
He does have limitations that we hope to identify over time and
hopefully find ways to help him with those limitations.
Bud came to us in shoes and we
were told his feet would not hold up without them. Part of his
problem is that his feet are too small for his body - he
is built like a tank! We pulled Bud's shoes in early summer 2007.
09/01/07: At the last minute today we decided to
enter Bud in two halter classes at the monthly benefit show. He
came out with two ribbons! Thanks Bernel for getting him ready in
such a short time and for taking him through the classes.

09/10/07: Bud's feet are not doing good. The weather is not being
kind to them. The farrier came out today and trimmed them again.
Bud is so big and heavy - too
much weight for his little feet - he is pretty uncomfortable.
A
wonderful angel bought Bud some new Cavallo boots to help ease his
discomfort. Another wonderful angel bought him some supplements to
help his feet.
03/05/08: Bud's front feet much are better. Now we hope to
get the back ones in great shape.
07/04/08: He is WAY overweight
and we've put him on a diet - he's not too happy about it but it's best
for him. He's a very easy keeper.

05/07/08: Buttercup arrived and is about 3 weeks old.
She is what is known as a nurse mare foal. Click on her picture
for more information.
Buttercup made friends with a colt her age that was also an orphan foal
- Golden Boy, aka Sand Storm, but he has gone to his new home.
She also made friends with Aaleyah Belle, another foal here that is
about her age that was going to be shot right after birth. Aaleyah's mom, Momma Sue, has accepted
Buttercup and treats her as her own. This is very good because we
believe all babies need a mom to teach them how to be a horse.

Gentleman is a 20+ year old Percheron. He came back to our
rescue on Thanksgiving Day, 2007 in what the vet determined to be a
"neglected" condition. Now, he's eating great - 4 smaller meals a day and
has hay 24/7. He's gaining weight at a good pace and is looking
better each day.
He's back in green pastures with old friends - its almost like
he never left. He's getting good exercise and he is
happy. His eyes are bright and he holds his head high.
He's a proud horse again. He's just as loving and as gentle as
ever.
Click on his picture to read more about him and to follow his progress.

Priceless!
After what Gentleman has been through we
have
decided he will remain a Sanctuary horse
and remain here at Beauty's Haven.

Chiquita is a 2 yr old Paso filly. She is very sweet and
inquisitive. She is also willing to please and a quick learner.
She arrived needing to gain quite a bit of weight. We had her feet
trimmed, they hadn't been done in quite awhile. We also had her
teeth done and learned that she has an underbite. Her top teeth do
not line up with her bottom teeth. She will need dental treatments
about every 8 months vs. annually.
Chiquita has put on 100+ lbs and is looking great. She's
healthy and happy and she is ready for a new forever home. Ideally, we
would love to find a home for her and Paco together. She has not
been started under saddle yet but will make a very good student.

Jewels is a 20+ yr old mare that was abandoned. She's a
Tennessee Walker / Peruvian Paso Fino cross - a Tennuvian!
When she arrived she wasn't very underweight - we've seen much
worse. But her feet were in terrible shape. She had no hair
on her butt - it was red raw and she was miserable.
X-rays of her front feet revealed that the coffin bone in each
had rotated about 30 degrees. It will take at least a year of frequent trimming but
the farrier believes she will recover. Keith Seeley trimmed her in
March 2007 and we saw an immediate difference. Granny is getting
trims every 3 weeks now and is doing better.
Oct 2007: X-rays show that Granny's
rotation is MUCH better. Now her discomfort is coming from the
fact that she has very thin soles. She received a gift of Cavallo
boots and they really help her a lot.
Feb 2008: Granny is having problems - her hindquarters and legs are weak and she is often unsteady. At times, she just won't
move. She gave us a huge scare at the end of February when she
almost went down from what appeared to be lack of control in her
hindquarters. We have a sling set up for her should she need
it. EPM hasn't been ruled out.
Mar 2008: Granny has had 2 treatments by the holistic vet and has
been started on EPM supplements. We'll have to give her some time
to see if she improves. She will need at least one more treatment.
Jewels is a beautiful, kind, and proud
mare. Click
here to go to her page for more
information. Visitors fall in
love with her. She makes a great babysitter.

Jake, is a 20 year old Draft/QH cross and a really sweet horse.
We bought him just as he was about to be loaded into a
trailer that would have been the last ride of his life. Jake
was about to be transported to a Texas slaughter house.
He would have died a very inhumane death only to be become dinner on someone's plate
in another country! He had rain rot, thrush, open wounds, was anemic, and was very much underweight.
Jake has old injuries from barb wire to both front legs and feet which
went untreated. He has allergies sometimes which he is treated for. Jake has a
swayback from poor nutrition and has has arthritis in his back, hips and knees. Supplements
help and he loves to be massaged. He loves people and is always
looking for a treat. He can give you looks that make you melt.
Jake was being ridden bareback to help keep him in
shape until in 2006 when we made
the decision to retire him because of arthritis which caused him the discomfort.
04/06/07: We had a new barefoot trimmer out to work on Jake.
His shoes were removed and we are going to give his feet another
chance to grow out naturally.
05/22/07: Jake's feet are doing great! The new trim
technique is working wonders. He tip toed for a few
days after his shoes were removed but he is doing really well.
07/12/07: Jake has a bad abscess in his right foot and
another that is not as bad in his left. These appear to be
stemming from the old wire injuries.
07/28/07: Jake's abscesses
popped which gave him relief.
Aug 2007: Jake got to meet one of his angels! Barbara made a
2+ hour drive to meet Jake and spend time with him. He LOVED the
attention and he felt so special - you could just see it written all
over him.
Nov 2007: Jake received a complimentary pair of Cavallo boots and
just loves them! They truly help his feet and now he's all over
the place.
Jan 2007: Jake's feet have taken a turn for the worse. He is
having a very hard time - the weather has not been kind to him or to
Bud. He's staying in the barn now when it rains and at night so he
won't be in the morning dew.
Feb 2008: Jake has been turned out now for about a week now and he
is good. He's moving around better and has been feeling good
enough to play with his old friend Gentleman.
July 2008: Jake is doing well. He still has good days and
bad days but he remains active. Everyone that meets him really
likes him. And he really loves his angel, Barbara (and her
family). She comes to visit each month and spoils him rotten!

07/08/08: Kid, a 3 year old TB gelding, arrived today. He
managed to find his way here after getting out of his paddock
which is over a mile from our rescue!
He has a very nice disposition and seems to love to be around people.
He has nice manners and is very kind.
Kid arrived with many cuts and scrapes from his nose to his tail. He has
a bad case of rain which is being treated. He should be ready for
adoption in early July.
Kid has been treated by the holistic vet and we've run a full chemistry
panel on him. Basically - he endured a lot of stress - physically
and emotionally before he got here. It will just take some time
for him to heal.

Kid - a month later. He's doing great!

06/05/08: Kiwi, a 20ish year old Appaloosa mare, arrived today.
She served humans well for years and this is how she was repaid -
neglected and abused. A show horse in her younger days. Then
a hack horse working for 6 hours a day under saddle taking various
customers on trail rides.
She developed Uveitis and was tucked away in a stall - forgotten about -
no longer important. She lost all vision in one eye and the vet
thinks she can see shadows, barely, in the other eye. We hate to
think about the pain she went through with the Uveitis going untreated.
Since Kiwi has been here she has improved daily. The first couple
of days the vet had to come out and treat her with Bio-Sponge for
diarrhea. She was very dehydrated and had to have fluids via IV.
She seemed depressed when she arrived - she'd had diarrhea for a few
days and just didn't feel well.
Kiwi has started gaining weight and is doing well. She must be
feeling better because today, June 19th, she made her way, grazing, up
to Magic's paddock (a stallion) and started flirting with him! We
had to escort her back to the barn paddock where she will have to stay
except at night and on cloudy days she can stay in the arena where it is
safe for her and there are horses she can socialize with over the fence.
Kiwi is a very sweet mare and there is no excuse for the abuse and
neglect this mare has endured. But that is over now. She
will live life without being hungry and her medical needs will
be taken care of. She would make a great pasture pal.Thank you to the Fans of Barbaro,
and other caring individuals, for helping with Kiwi's vet bills!

Momma Sue is a 16 yr old TB mare that gave birth to a baby on Kentucky
Derby day, 2008. The day that Eight Belles gave her all at the
derby - including her life. We named the baby Aaleyah Belle in
honor Eight Belles. After she was born she was going to be shot
because she had a wry nose and her mom wasn't wanted. We were
notified of the situation and picked both up that day. Aaleyah
Belle was only a few hours old.
Momma Sue was very thin and neglect was obvious. We had the vet
out right away to flush her out and put her on some meds to help make
sure she didn't get an infection. Neither the baby or mom had vet
care after the baby was born. Momma Sue is a good mom and loves
Aaleyah Belle. She's come a long way in a short time. She
and Aaleyah went to UF for Aaleyah to have surgery to correct her wry
nose.
Just a couple of days before Momma Sue had a gassy colic and we were
very worried. The stress of poor to little nutrition, having a
baby, and general neglect had taken a toll on her. The vet came
out and treated her and by the next day she was much better. Many
people don't realize, or either don't care, about what horses like Momma
Sue go through.
Momma Sue's feet were horrible and have been trimmed twice since she has
been here. She has put on at least 150 lbs. and is looking
awesome. She, like her baby, have the most beautiful big brown
eyes.
A nurse mare foal arrived only days after Momma Sue and Aaleyah Belle
arrived. Her name is Buttercup. Over time, Momma Sue must
have realized Buttercup had no mom and she has since started to "mommy"
her too. It is very nice to see. All babies need a mom to
teach them how to be a horse. And Aaleyah Belle and Buttercup have
each other to play with.
This is Momma Sue with Buttercup and Aaleyah Belle is on the far side
talking with the vet.

06/08/08: Paco is a five year old Paso Fino that was surrendered
to the rescue along with Chiquita, a two year old filly. We have
been told that he has a lot of training.
Paco was underweight and wormy when he arrived. His feet were
horrible. Since he has been here, his feet have been done and the
equine dentist did his teeth.
He is a very nice horse and you can tell he is feeling much better.
He loves to pretend he is bigger then the other horses but they let him
know otherwise. He also really likes the girls and can be a real
show off.
Ideally, we would like to find a home for Paco and Chiquita together but
it is not necessary.

Princess is a 20 year old Arabian mare that is healthy, happy, and just
beautiful!
Princess has been ridden hunter and has done lower level dressage.
She has been a pasture pal for the last 4 years but is in great health
and would make a nice trail horse. It wouldn't take much to tune
her up.
She is sound, no vices, and gets along with everyone. |

July 2008: Sparky's back.
He is a 10 yr old Appaloosa gelding that was saved from the New Holland
auction in PA. He is blind in one eye. When he arrived in
2006 he had road founder in all 4 feet and came down with strangles for
4 months. After a year of rehab, Sparky went to a new home in
2007. He left here healthy and happy and we were very happy for
him. Sometimes, circumstances change which make it necessary, in
the best interest of the horse, to bring the horse back.
Sparky is now back at his foster home where Anne and her family will
take very good care of him.
Click on his picture to learn more about him, his condition, and his
progress. Sparky needs angels. |

Stormy is a 3 y/o TB filly. She was purchased as a very small 2
year old and the breeder said he knew it wouldn’t even be worth it to
take her to a sale. She is a very sweet girl, but has not had any
under saddle training.
She leads easily and obeys well. She stands quietly to be groomed,
and is good for the farrier and vet. She does not tie. She has
been bridled daily and used to a bit. When she first arrived her
stifles locked frequently. The vet said she may grow out of it or
that with exercise it would improve. He was right - she is much
better today. She is quiet and smart.
When you see her move, she looks like a lovely hunter or jumper prospect
(she LOVES to run in the field).
